The Role

Nowhere else in the UK is undergoing transformation on the scale of Newham. A vibrant, optimistic, young and diverse borough, we are well placed to accommodate much of London's eastwards expansion in the 21st Century.

Whilst growth will improve the borough's economy, it must also transform the opportunities and life chances of our residents, ensuring everyone's a winner. We are hugely ambitious for all our children and young people. We want them to be able to take full advantage of the exciting opportunities available. As our Director, you will be accountable for a range of services for children and young people which include social care and learning – whether directly delivered, integrated or commissioned. However, our expectation is that you will challenge us to look at what we do and how we do it in a fresh light. Your willingness to explore new models of delivery and draw on best practice from home and abroad will help us debate and adopt innovative practices which will help keep our children safe and help them to be happy, healthy and successful.

We will keep an open mind as to your background but clearly you will need to understand the challenges of this high profile and statutory DCS role and be able to show personal and professional resilience in a fast paced environment. You will also relish the opportunity to work as part of a collegiate team and engage with our partners, particularly our schools and communities, in London's most exciting borough.

For a confidential discussion about the role please call our retained consultants from Penna Maggie Hennessy on 07877 004648 or Rebecca Jones on 020 7332 7870.

Closing date for applications: 31 July 2014.
