Welcome Letter

I am delighted that you are interested in becoming Director of Children's Services in this dynamic and aspirational borough. Newham is a vibrant, optimistic, young and diverse place to live. Nowhere in the UK is undergoing transformation on the scale of Newham. We have a growing population with a large increase in the number of young families. This is a complex and challenging role but one that could offer you the opportunity to really make an impact.

At the heart of the borough's transformation programme is its commitment to build individual, community and economic resilience (http://www.newham.gov.uk/Pages/Services/Resilience.aspx). After decades of creating and fostering dependency, the Council is determined to support individuals and communities to take control of their lives and become less dependent on public service support.

Newham has high aspirations for its children, young people and families. We want our children to get the best start in life and to achieve their potential. The Director of Children's Services will play a vital role in ensuring that Newham is a place where every child and young person is healthy, safe and has the opportunity to succeed.

We are looking for a leader who can build on our strengths, drive improvement and forge positive working relationships with partners. Strong partnership is essential to delivering the best outcomes for our children and young people. It will be vital for you to work effectively in partnership with schools to support continuous improvement and effective collaboration. Developing effective partnership working with health is also essential and we will expect you to play an active role as a member of the Health and Wellbeing Board.

The Director of Children's Services will have responsibility for the strategic commissioning and direct delivery of services for children and families. The successful candidate will need to be someone who can drive innovation and develop models of provision that build resilience and achieve excellent outcomes.

Newham is hugely ambitious for its children and young people. If you can match our ambition and have the skills, resilience and experience to make a difference in this fast-paced environment we look forward to receiving your application. We are open minded as to your professional background but you will need to have the credibility required to fulfil the challenges of this high profile and statutory DCS role.

For a confidential discussion about the role please contact our retained consultants from Penna, Maggie Hennessy on 07877 004648 or Rebecca Jones on 020 7332 7870.

Best regards,

Kim Bromley-Derry
